What is Life Coaching ?

The International Coach Federation (ICF) defines coaching as partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential.

In today’s uncertain and complex environment, coaching is particularly important. It is all about looking forward rather then reflecting in the past and it focuses on the premise that all that is required is within you.

Why should you consider Life Coaching ?

As life progresses the gap between what you want and what you get widens resulting in frustration, blockage in thought process, lack of confidence, belief etc. The complexities of life and daily challenges will stop you to look within and find solutions. In such cases seeking advice from family, friends or well wishers can often be counter productive as they come with pre judged notions about you. This is where coaching steps in. The coach will objectively focus on designing and implementing specific, meaningful changes in your personal and professional life.

Life Coaching Questions:

Unlike what most of us think, coaching is neither a lecture or consulting session that can yield results overnight.

Coaching is all about focusing on setting goals and working towards the desired outcomes while embracing changes. Coaching is all about you as it believes in the principle that all that you need is within you. The key differences from other professional services are following:

Therapy: Coaching is not therapy. Therapy focuses on resolving challenges arising out of an individuals past that hampers his emotional functioning in the present. Unlike therapy, coaching does not deal with an individuals past experiences or traumas. Coaching focuses more on the personal and professional goals derived out of self initiated change for a desired outcome.

Consulting: Consulting is often based on the expertise of the subject. So if an organization or an individual is facing any particular type of challenge, they will hire a consultant who is an expert or has knowledge and experience on the subject. A Life coach may or may not have the required expertise on the subject. A consultant will suggest solutions and do the implementation as well with your participation whereas a coach will use tools and processes to help clients to generate their own solutions and then hold them accountable for following through.

Best friend: It is great to have a few close friends who are always there for you. However most of them will not be able to objectively help you without being judgmental or without the fear of upsetting you by speaking the truth. A coach is not scared to tell you the truth and is ready to be fired if it is not benefiting you.

The duration of a coaching partnership will totally depend on an individual’s needs and preferences. For some, coaching of 3 to 6 months with a session every fortnight or once in a month is good enough, whereas for a few, longer periods of an year may be more effective. It all depends on the types of goals and outcomes one wants to achieve, the time one has to devote, the way an individual works and also the financial resources available to support coaching.

The first step towards hiring a coach is a personal interview either on Skype or teleconference or in person. It helps to define the scope of the relationship, assess current opportunities and challenges, identify priorities and establish specific desired outcomes. The number of sessions required to achieve the desired outcome will be discussed and the financial aspect will also be finalized. Based on the discussions, subsequent sessions will happen over Skype or teleconference or in person. To make the sessions more effective and achieve the desired outcomes, the coach may ask to complete specific actions. The coach may help with additional resources like relevant articles, checklists or models to support the actions.
